Qualitative testing:

However, its limitations also matter for compliance assurance. Results depend not only on the wearer’s sensory perception, but also on the competence and consistency of the person conducting the test. Factors such as strong food or drink recently consumed, tiredness, reduced taste sensitivity, and variations in how the test is administered can all affect the outcome. Because qualitative testing relies on correct technique, there is potential for inconsistent results if the process is not carried out in line with recognised guidance.

In practice, if the method is not applied correctly, there is a risk that an inadequate seal may not be identified, which could result in a false pass rather than a false fail. Qualitative testing also does not provide numerical measurement data, which means the results may offer less detailed evidential support during audits or investigations.


While qualitative testing can appear straightforward to implement, its effectiveness depends on careful application, as there are multiple stages within the process where variation can occur.


For organisations with lower-risk environments and consistent mask usage, qualitative testing may be sufficient. However, when audits become more rigorous or when roles involve stronger hazards, qualitative testing alone may provide less detailed evidential support.

Quantitative testing uses a quantitative face fit testing machine to measure particle leakage or pressure differences inside the mask. The result is an objective and quantifiable fit factor, which numerically confirms whether the respirator seal is adequate.

From a compliance standpoint, quantitative testing offers several advantages:

  • Greater repeatability: reducing reliance on subjective wearer feedback
  • Broader mask compatibility: essential for full-face respirators and SCBA systems.
  • Comprehensive documentation: results can be exported as clear, audit-ready evidence.
These strengths mean that quantitative testing often provides a more robust foundation for demonstrating regulatory compliance. In sectors such as emergency services, petrochemical environments, healthcare and large-scale industrial settings, quantitative testing is increasingly regarded as the gold standard.
