Do farmers need respiratory protective devices when working in the fresh country air? Often, yes, they do. Respiratory health in farming is receiving renewed attention after campaigners called for a stronger culture of prevention across the agricultural sector. The message is not that farmers have ignored safety, but that airborne risks from emissions, dust particles, and chemical fertilisers are often less visible than machinery, livestock or falls, even though some health effects may develop over time following repeated exposure. Farm Respiratory Protection: A Day-Do-Day Issue For UK Agricultural Workers
Farmers, contractors and rural employees are exposed to a variety of airborne contaminants on a daily basis. Dust from grain, straw, hay, bedding, animal feed and soil can all be present during routine work, and mould spores may be released when handling damp or spoiled material. Some agricultural tasks also involve fumes, sprays or other substances controlled under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (CoSHH). Does this mean that farmers should all wear respiratory protective equipment (RPE) as a matter of course? Not necessarily, but it does pay to understand where exposure occurs and put suitable controls in place.
This process starts with a hierarchy of control. Wherever possible, dust should be reduced at source through good handling methods, ventilation, extraction, enclosed transfer systems, cab filtration or changes to the way a task is carried out. Respiratory protective equipment is then used where exposure cannot be adequately controlled by other means.
Why “A Mask” Is Not Always Enough
When searching for masks for farmers, it is important to recognise that products can range from simple dust masks to professional-grade respirators designed for workplace hazards. What is it that your employees genuinely need in each risk context? A comfort or nuisance dust mask is not the same as a properly specified respirator. For dusty agricultural work, the equipment must be suitable for the hazard, marked to the relevant standard, worn correctly and capable of adequately sealing the wearer’s face.
Under the Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018, the relevant product standard for disposable filtering half masks used for particulate hazards is BS EN 149:2001+A1:2009, with FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 indicating the protection class. In the UK, compliant products should carry the appropriate conformity marking — UKCA or CE (for products sold in NI and legacy stock in GB) — and be supported by the required declaration of conformity and manufacturer’s instructions. In some higher-exposure situations involving grain dust or mould spores, FFP3-level protection may be appropriate as part of the wider risk assessment process.
The Importance Of Fit Testing
Fit is just as important as the filter rating. Tight-fitting respiratory protective devices rely on an adequate seal against the face. If the seal leaks, unfiltered air can enter around the edge of the mask. Facial hair, poor strap adjustment, incompatible eyewear or the wrong mask size can all undermine protection.
Face fit testing should therefore be part of any serious farm respiratory protection programme. The HSE’s current guidance on respiratory protective equipment fit testing explains fit testing methods, what can be achieved from a fit test and what should be included in a fit test report. The wearer's seal check before each use is useful, but it is not a replacement for a proper fit test.
Turning Awareness Into Routine Practice
Agricultural workers have always had to balance safety with time pressure, weather windows, seasonal labour and unpredictable working days. Good respiratory protection has to work within that reality.
A practical programme should identify dusty and hazardous tasks, select suitable respiratory protective devices, fit test tight-fitting masks, train workers in correct use and storage, and replace disposable respirators when contaminated, damaged or past their useful life. Where substances such as grain dust may cause occupational asthma or other disease, health surveillance may also be required under COSHH.
Respiratory protection should be considered as part of routine planning for harvesting, grain handling, bedding work, sweeping, poultry work, feed mixing and other routine activities where airborne exposure is foreseeable.
